Studio Profile: Fierce45
As part of the Among the Colors Wellness Challenge, each week I am going to profile a different Wellness business in the Denver area. For the first week, I am kicking things off with a new studio to Denver, Fierce45. Fierce45 is a Lagree Method mega reformer studio in the Denver Highlands. The mega reformer is a new machine that is a hybrid of the Pilates reformer, but with additional functionality that includes a wider range of movements, and therefore a more intense, or "fierce" workout. The Lagree Method was founded by Sebastien Lagree in Los Angeles after he noticed many of his clients hitting the treadmill after their Pilates sessions. Lagree worked with engineers to design an amped up version of the reformer. The result is the mega reformer. Lagree estimates that an average-sized woman can burn more than 700 calories in a 50 minute class. As if that isn't incentive enough, the workout is low impact so it is a safe way to strengthen and tone the body. The compound movements in the workout create flexibility, tone and elongate the muscles, improve endurance, and burn fat.
I had no idea of any of this when I first went to class. Torrey is a friend of mine I had met through yoga, so I first showed up to show support for this new studio that my friend had opened. I was so surprised as to how intensive and immensely difficult the exercises were. Unlike the intensity of cross fit or circuit training, the Lagree Method had me just as challenged, but it was still a movement-based exercise, which is what I prefer.
I was instantly hooked.
I have been going for two months 3 times a week and I am starting to see amazing changes in my body. I have more tone arms, more slender thighs, and am starting to get some ab definition. (yay!) In addition to being stoked to see results in my body, I really love the community at the studio. Most of the teachers come from a yoga teaching background, so there is a very open, friendly, and supportive vibe at the studio. Being that I can ride by bike to the studio in under 5 minutes is a bonus too. On the weekends I ride my bike to the studio and then hit the farmer's market or brunch afterwards. It's my favorite way to start the weekend. I know I have definitely earned that bloody mary.
I interviewed Torrey about Fierce45, what inspired her to open the studio, and bring the Lagree Method to Denver. For more on Fierce45, go to www.fierce45.com, or follow them on instagram. To find out where Lagree Method is close to you, check it out here.
What is your fitness background?
I grew up as a ballerina in Dallas Texas and studied from the age of 3 until 17. I actually spent a summer when I was 16 in NYC dancing at the School of American Ballet which was pretty amazing! I got hooked on running and yoga in college at Skidmore in upstate NY. I did a 200 hour yoga teacher training in Chicago in 2005 and feel in love with yoga and vinyasa in particular. When I moved to Boulder in 2006 I started teaching yoga and did so until just last year. I love getting people stronger not just physically but mentally as well. When you can use fitness as a tool to gain confidence and presence of mind and spirit that is when real change happens.
How did you discover the Lagree method and what inspired you to bring it to Denver?
I found out about Lagree in NYC a few years ago at a studio called SLT. I thought I was strong going into class but the next day I was SO sore!!! I had quit my full time sales job in the spring of 2014 so I could focus on starting a new path but I was unsure what that would be. I went to Dallas for a little bit to visit my family and my sister took me to a Lagree studio in Dallas and I got hooked!!!! When I got home I couldn't find what I wanted so the light bulb went off.
What do you love most about your studio and the community at Fierce45?
I love it ALL! But seriously I love our community of coaches and staff AND most importantly our customers. It's become a place people run into old friends and a place people have made life long friends. The space and being limited to 10 people per class builds a sort of camaraderie.
What is your advice to someone new to Fierce45 and the Lagree method?
Don't be afraid! It is hard and it will challenge you but we can also modify everything to an individuals needs. Bring sticky socks and a "can do" attitude !
Describe your fitness activities outside of the studio.
I love to be outside hiking or trail running, and I go to yoga about 2 times a week now if I'm lucky. Yoga has become more meditative/stretchy and less about getting a work out in - which is awesome!
What is your favorite clean eating meal?
My favorite clean eating meal is a giant salad with a lean protein and homemade balsamic dressing - I like to load on bell peppers, fresh tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, raisins and either grilled chicken or homemade tuna salad that is super lean.
What is your favorite food indulgence?
NACHOS! And a margarita of course....
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness means balance to me. It's mind, body, and spirit in alignment. It means being kind to yourself so you can be kind to others.
