Wellness Challenge Week 1
Welcome to the first ever Among the Colors Wellness Challenge! This project started as a way for me to have some accountability for my summer workout routine, and quickly evolved into a way to experiment, expand and connect with the wellness and fitness community in Denver and beyond. I have created this challenge as a way to inspire myself to stay active and to hopefully inspire you to try new types of activities and wellness routines. This is not your "before and after photos" wellness or fitness challenge. Or a give up everything delicious, including wine, wellness challenge. It's summer, and those patio watermelon cocktails and glasses of rose' are not going to drink themselves. There are BBQs to go to, picnics to be enjoyed, and concerts at Red Rocks to be experienced. So this is not a diet or a cleanse, but rather a challenge. A wellness challenge of the body, of the spirit and of the mind. A source of inspiration, motivation and experimentation. My goal with this goes beyond wanting to loose 5 pounds. (which I definitely hope to do) My goal with this challenge is to create new patterns of exercise that become part of the way I choose to move. To get outside of my usual workout routines at the same studios and experience the wider community of wellness and fitness happening in this very active city that I live in. And most importantly, my goals with this challenge are to clear my head, uplift my spirit, and enter the fall and winter seasons with a sense of strength, confidence and ease.
For this challenge, I've joined ClassPass along with my monthly membership to my favorite studio, so that I can expand my horizons, challenge my body, and be open to new experiences. Each week I will share my stories from the week before, as well as offer profiles and interviews on different Yoga, Pilates, Barre and Cardio studios around Denver that I discover with my ClassPass. I will also feature interviews with local wellness companies along the way. For those of you in Denver, there will be great incentives to tempt you to join me on this challenge. And for all my readers outside of Denver, I hope my journey inspires you to try new studios and types of fitness outside of your usual routine. There will be recipes and self care tips along the way too. I invite you to participate with me in whatever way calls to you and to share your stories with me along the way. I invite you to ask "where can I bring more wellness into my life?"
Use #ATCwellness and #ATCchallenge2015 to share your story.
Wellness Challenge Goals
- Eat whole foods. No gluten, no corn, no soy and no processed sugars. (honey, maple syrup, coconut sugars fine)
- Move 6 days a week, taking one day for rest.
- Start each day with a glass of lemon water.
- Do some sort of self care each week. (detox bath, massage, yin yoga class, etc.)
- Gratitude journaling. Once a week take time to write down the things that I am thankful for that week.
- Go make up free on Mondays. (yikes, but I am going to do it!)
Sunday- I started this challenge with a day or rest and self care; a day at the pool with my girlfriends. We soaked in the sun, had soulful conversations, sipped cocktails and floated in the water. Full on summer self care at it's finest.
Monday- QiFlow 5:30 pm class. QiFlow is a mixture of yoga, dance and capoeria. It is asana set to choreography and music. This was my first time at this studio, and such an amazing way to kick off the Among the Colors Wellness Challenge! I took class from the owner of the studio, Dawnelle Auther, and was inspired by her passion and movement awareness. We used these "mobility sticks" to open our shoulders and create mobility in the body. I have really "crunchy" shoulders from using the computer and my painting practice so this was such a pleasant treat. We moved in asana in a poetic version of sun salutation set as choreography to songs by the Black Keys and Glass Animals. Super groovy. This studio has lots of cool yoga fusion classes that I am excited to try.
Tuesday- Fierce45 and Yoga Pod Vinyasa Flow. Today was a double up Tuesday. I started the morning with a 9 am Fierce45 class. Fierce45 is a Lagree Method pilates studio that recently opened up in my neighborhood. I can ride my bike there in 3 minutes... So that rocks. I will be doing my first studio profile on Fierce45 later this week. After I trembled my way through Fierce, I made my way to my girl Clare Anderson's 10:30 am Vinyasa Flow at Yoga Pod Lodo. It was so nice to open the hips, and we worked our way to peak pose, fire fly. (using blocks) I love Clare's class so much. I try to go every week that I can. She has a beautiful balance between helping students soften into their practice, yet also find their edge and challenge themselves into a peak pose. I gracefully made my way into firefly with blocks without jolting or pushing my body. Pretty cool.
Wednesday- Fierce45 9 am class. Torrey, the owner of the studio, taught the class. Her infectious spirit and enthusiasm keeps me going even when I think I am going to fall right off that mega reformer machine!
Thursday- Samadhi Yoga, Gentle Vinyasa. 10:30 am. I joined two girlfriends who are regulars at the Samadhi studio for a gentle vinyasa class with Michelle Lee. It was my first gentle vinyasa class. We slowly made our way through sun salutations and a few warrior variations. We ended with a supported legs up the wall pose for about 5 minutes. It was so rejuvenating. Michelle has a grace and ease about her. I will definitely be back.
Friday- The Dailey Method 10:30 am. This was my first time to this barre studio. I took a class from Carrie, the studio owner. The class focused on abs, arms and thigh mostly. I was super surprised that my triceps were sore for 3 days after this class. Lots of core strength focus and attention to alignment. I look forward to going back.
Saturday- Fierce45 10 am. I rode my bike to this Saturday morning class. We did way too many squats for something Torrey called, "Squat Saturday." Then I rode my bike to the farmer's market and rewarded myself by buying fresh peaches to make a peach crisp. A gluten free, paleo peach crisp. (Recipe coming later this month.)
