Wellness Business Profile: Haiku Foods
Photos by Sara Ford
This week's featured wellness business is a great new natural food start up out of Denver called Haiku Foods. I had the pleasure of first meeting Hannah at my neighborhood farmer's market earlier this summer. She had a delicious spread of "samples" in which I preceeded to overly help myself. There were 4 different flavors of kraut, paleo granola and flax seed crackers. I was basically like, "who is this goddess bringing me all of these amazing things that I can eat and are so good for me?" We talked about fermentation and it's health benefits and I explained that I had always been a little weary to try to ferment at home and would love to learn. We decided to co-host a fermentation workshop at my art studio so that not only I could learn these anicent healing food techniques, but so could others.
I interviewed Hannah Abraham, founder of Haiku Foods, about her inspiration to start this company and what wellness means to her. Please check out our interview and photos from our fermentation workshop below.
Have you ever fermented? Would you like to learn? I will be sharing Hannah's simple recipe later this week so be sure to check it out.
How did you discover fermentation and what inspired you to start your food company?
I began experimenting with fermenting food about 8 years ago when I started to realize that food is medicine. I came to this place because of my life long struggle with food allergies and several other health conditions. So much of what I was learning was coming from a book called Nourishing Traditions, written by Sally Fallon. I started becoming obsessed with fermentation, everything about the process fascinated me! Adding these foods to my diet and cutting out the junk changed the way my body was functioning. I wanted to share my experience with people and make this type of food more commonly available, that is the main reason why I started Haiku Foods.
What do you love most about Haiku foods?
Haiku Foods has been a wild ride so far! There are days when I question being an entrepreneur and other days that I feel so grateful for where I am. The most fulfilling part is when customers tell me how much they are effected by this food. I love seeing and speaking with people face to face about the benefits and the power of adding fermentation into the diet. I also love knowing that I am bringing ancient food to our modern world.
Describe your fitness activities and what inspires you to exercise.
I have been practicing yoga for a few years now almost everyday. To get my heart rate going I run. I can't say that I always want to show up to my mat each day or go out for a run at 5am, but what motivates me is the fulfillment afterwords. The productivity and stress relief that comes with movement is necessary for me to have a successful day.
What is your favorite clean eating meal? What is your favorite food indulgence?
My favorite nutrient dense meal that always makes me feel amazing afterwords is a piping hot bowl of bone broth based stew. Every time I make a batch of bone broth I feel amazing! I always try to have some stashed away in my freezer (even in the summer) when I need a little bit of comfort food. When I need to indulge it's usually with some coconut milk ice cream. I recently found one that has crystalized ginger and honey it's pretty much the best treat ever!
What does wellness mean to you?
To me wellness is living in harmony with my body. For years I felt like my body was at war with itself and was literally in destruction mode. At this point in my life after years of working towards wellness I have a deep sense of how precious our bodies are and don't want to cause harm to all of the systems within my body that take care of me. Wellness is laughing, playing, and enjoying life each day at a time.
