This year for the holidays, I really wanted to do something to give back to my local community of Denver. My art studio is on the “other side of the tracks” in the RiNo art district, and every day for 6 years I drive by a homeless shelter on my daily commute. I’ve dropped of a few bags of stuff here and there for the homeless gathering outside, but this year I really wanted to organize and take action. So all of us at Among the Colors joined forces, and we hosted a community drive in my art studio for people to bring items to donate. We gathered around 500 lbs. of items from sleeping bags and blankets to tolietries and food. Several local businesses donated items too including Fig & Yarrow, Spinster Sisters and Kali tampons. Socks were donated by Stance and Grandview Hosiery. It was so great to see so many friends come and bring their kids to help gather items to make the winter a little more bearable to our city’s homeless.
Want to organize a donation drive in your city? Google your area to find places that accept donations and then host an event in a place that is easy for friends and family to go to. Bag everything up by catagory and schedule a drop off at your local shelter or coalition.
Items to collect:
- small soaps/shampoo/conditioner
- sleeping bags
- hand and feet warmers
- granola bars
- bottled water
