Looking for the perfect fall and holiday cocktail? I’ve got you covered. This Apple Cider Whiskey Sour is absolute fall perfection in a glass. I was actually given the recipe for this cocktail last year while visiting Atlanta and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. It beautifully mixes the crisp seasonal flavors of the apple with the richness of the whiskey. Even if you’re not much of a whiskey drinker, I have a feeling you are going to enjoy this drink.
This is a great recipe to pre-batch as well which makes it perfect for when you are entertaining. Just mix the ingredients together minus the ice and store in a mason jar or sealed pitcher for the evening and pour as needed. But fair warning, this cocktail is so deliciously balanced you may just forget you are drinking whiskey!
Apple Cider Whiskey Sour
Makes 1 cocktail.
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 1/2 ounce boiled apple cider
- 3/4 ounce Averna Amaro
- 1 1/2 ounce bourbon of your choice
- optional spritz of salt water
- large ice cubes
First, make the salt water. Bring water to a boil and pour it over a mug with some salt in it. The mixture should be 50% salt to water. Once chilled enough, pour salt mixture into a spritzer bottle. Set aside as the salt water spritz will be the finishing touch. You can also disregard the salt water aspect of the cocktail, as it is an added element.
To assemble the cocktail pour the lemon juice, apple cider, Averna and bourbon into a shaker with ice. Stir well. Then pour over a large rock in an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon. (To make a lemon twist, simply use a carrot grater and peel part of the lemon off, and then twist it and drop it in the glass.)
