Need some last minute gifts? Or just a little boozy cocktail to get you in the holiday spirit? This Fernet Hot Chocolate makes a perfect gift, or treat for yourself this holiday and winter season.

Fernet is an Italian amaro and digestif. During my trip to Italy this summer, I feel deeply in love with this digestif as a shot to have after a meal to settle the stomach. Not only is it delicious, but it works. Fernet has a blend of herbs that have notes of saffron, myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile and cardamom. It makes a lovely pairing with hot chocolate.

This gift set makes 8-10 cups of hot chocolate with your favorite nut milk or milk. The fernet mini bottle is perfect for one drink. Other recommendations are bourbon or tequila.

Fernet Hot Chocolate

makes 8-10 cups.

  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons coconut sugar
  • 4 tablespoons dark chocolate chips
  • handful of vegan marshmallows (optional)

Assemble jars with cocoa powder, then coconut sugar, chocolate chips and top off with marshmallows. 

For cooking, heat cocoa powder, sugar and chips in nut milk. Stir often. One tablespoon of each for each cup of milk. I make an handwritten tag with instructions on back.

 

For serving:

  • bourbon whipped cream (optional) Just whip cream with tablespoon of sugar and tablespoon of bourbon to half cup of cream.
