Two days ago my dear grandmother turned 95. Mildred Manning, aka Granny, is a force to be reckoned with. She is the epitome of a strong Southern woman. Granny still keeps us all on our toes. She still wears red lipstick and pearls every day. She amazes me with her passion for life. She is well known for her expansive rose garden of over 30 varieties. She is also known for her beverage of choice, Jack Daniels on the rocks. But Granny is most known for her bourbon pecan pie. I cannot think of a single Thanksgiving in my childhood where Granny didn’t show up with pie for all. Pie for Thanksgiving dinner, but also pie to take home. Because who doesn’t love a to-go pie? Granny still bakes 20-30 of these pies each holiday seasons and gives them out to the most lucky recipients.

In many ways, I am doing my best to follow in this strong Scorpio woman’s footsteps. Through my passion as an amateur rose gardener to my ability to drink several whiskey on the rocks, and last but not least, her bourbon pecan pie.  I have simply switched out the crust for my favorite gluten free crust, and replaced corn syrup with brown rice syrup. The results are rich and divine. My favorite thing about the holidays is having my own pie in the fridge after the busyness of the holiday party has settled, and I can wake up and eat pie in my pajamas.

So this one is for you Granny. Thank you for inspiring us all and showing us that life still be a party at 95.

Granny’s Bourbon Pecan Pie

Makes 1 pie.

  • 3 eggs well beaten
  • 1/2 cup organic sugar
  • 1 cup brown rice syrup
  • 1 cup pecans
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon grass fed butter
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 gluten free pie crust

Preheat oven to 300. Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a whisk. Pour into pie crust. Garnish with more pecans on top to decorate. Bake at 1 hour to 1 hour and a half. At altitude, bake 1 hour and a half to 1 hour 45 minutes. Let totally cool before cutting. I like to put in the freezer to set. Serve with bourbon whipped cream.
