Art influences Art

On my most recent trip to New York, I strolled into Rachel Comey's SoHo boutique. The space has a cool industrial feel from the outside, and then you step into a well lit space filled with creatively fun clothing. Mos Def and Talib Kwali's Black Star is playing through the speakers. Stacks of contemporary art hard-bound books are placed throughout the boutique. Rachel Comey comes from an art background, and it is ever so evident how art has inspired the collections. I looked through the summer collection and pre-fall items that were in the store as if walking through an art gallery, carefully observing texture, color and shape. There is this black romper with sequin-sewn eyes with shimmery lashes all over it, and I swoon. And then I saw the shoes. Not just any shoes, but shoes that look like they could have been born straight out of my art studio. Shoes that look like a colorful sculpture for your feet. Shoes that scream rock star, morning after house slippers.
I also scored on this gorgeous off white, denim dress. The dress feels very sculptural to me and is a piece where I can definitely tell Rachel's formal training as a sculptor. It only felt right to shoot this look in my art studio.
