Big thanks to everyone who came out to the opening reception of our newest exhibition, And Longing is Overthrown. This works on paper show features two Denver artists, Jason Lee Gimbel and Christopher R. Perez, who are both Denver natives and have been exhibiting their work in Denver and beyond for over 20 years.
Jason Lee Gimbel’s larger than life charcoal figure drawings are masterful yet witty and have layers of meaning built into each drawing. These works are presented on delicate newsprint paper and adhered to the wall with gigantic magnetic thumbtacks that Jason makes out of wood and paint. These thumbtacks become a whimsical part of the work and their own piece of art as well. You can even purchase one (or several) of these limited edition thumbtacks for part of your own art installation. Thumbtacks aside, there is no denying the level of skill and awareness of anatomy that Jason brings to his figure drawing. No wonder he used to teach figure drawing classes at RedLine in Denver.
Christopher R. Perez’s black and white portraits are so carefully created that the leave fellow photographer’s contemplating the process in which they are made. His wet plate exposure and platinum prints are process driven and help Perez to create a world all his own. None of this comes as a surprise to me, a long time friend of Chris, as his care for what he makes not only makes him an amazing photographer, but also incredible framer as one can see in his custom maple wood frames, an esteemed art handler, and co-founder of Processus, an artist’s co-working studio featuring a dark room, wood shop and print shop in downtown Denver.
In honor of our current exhibition, we will be hosting an open figure drawing night with Jason Lee Gimbel with a nude model and materials provided to guests, as well as a studio visit to Christopher R. Perez’s dark room at Processus.
